Midland Theatre

Renovation | Kansas City, MO

Overview

The Midland Theatre is located in Kansas City’s Power & Light District, originally opened in October 1927 as one of the Midwest’s largest movie theaters. It was redeveloped over a decade ago to restore its historic grandeur.

In February 2021, a winter storm caused a water line break in an adjacent building, resulting in significant flooding on the stage, back-of-house areas, and basement, as well as damage to portions of the historic plaster ceiling and all production equipment, including the speaker array, lighting consoles, and fly rail system.

MIKA Project Partners was contracted by AEG Presents in May 2021 to serve as Owner’s Representative for the remediation project. Their scope included overseeing design documentation, reviewing design and pricing with the general contractor, and coordinating with insurance adjusters and consultants. With a tight timeline of less than 90 days to meet the first scheduled show, Mika Project Partners led a high-performing team to deliver on time, restoring the Midland to full operation while preserving its historic character.
